WP7 – SEDIMENT MANAGEMENT (INCLUDING LARGE WOOD)

Sediment (including large wood) management in mountain watersheds, headwater systems and river basins must be based on the analysis and assessment of sediment regime-fluxes-dynamics at different spatial and temporal scale, as well as the interactions with existing and planned man-made structures. WP7 focuses on the integration of methodological approaches across scales and will provide guidelines for policy development in the context of  sediment and large wood management.

Actions

  • Developing scaling approaches to link basin and channel processes;
  • Estimation of present sediment transfer characteristics for the pilot basins;
  • Assessment of different options for reservoir management (incl. “re-cycling” issues) in the context of the scaling-approach;
  • Evaluation of the effects of sediment extraction for raw material use on sediment yield and related to hydro-morphological aspects.

Expected outputs

  • Guidelines for estimation of sediment and wood budgets in different hydro-climatic and geological settings.
  • Guidelines for determining scenarios to be used for flood risk mitigation.
  • Guidelines for the identification of morphological impacts related to existing and new hydropower plants and gravel extraction.
